Founded in 1979, GERFEC aims to contribute to the building of peace in Europe. It is looking to develop a pedagogy of intercultural and interfaith dialogue in schools.
Following our recent relocation from Strasbourg to Brussels we are hoping to encourage an ever-greater openness toward the educational problems of today’s Europe.
“Le Groupement Européen pour la Recherche et la Formation des Enseignants Chrétiens, Croyants et de toutes Convictions” (European Group for research and training of teachers holding Christian and other beliefs and convictions.)GERFEC is an association set up under the French 1908 law, modified by the law of 1 st August 2003. It was registered in Strasbourg in 1979 as a “French association with European outreach”.
Aims GERFEC aspires to encourage intercultural openness in Europe through the means of education. At present GERFEC is concentrating on intercultural dialogue whereby Europeans may learn to live and work together in the context of today's Europe. In this we are at one with the Year of Intercultural Dialogue being promoted by the European Commission.
The GERFEC Council consists of representatives from each of the 14 countries at present working with us: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and United Kingdom. We hope in the future to extend our representation to include other member-countries of the EU and of the Council of Europe.
The GERFEC network
The GERFEC network operates through all those who have taken part in our various European activities. At present GERFEC is contacting many of its former ‘stagiaires' with a view to forming a network of schools and colleges associated to GERFEC. When this is complete we shall be able to realise such projects as :
Research and activity projects around intercultural dialogue.
Comenius and Leonardo projects between schools. Our courses draw participants from ten or more countries each time and offer an excellent opportunity to develop partnerships.
Themed exchanges not linked to European programmes. Such exchanges would concentrate particularly on intercultural and inter-convictional dialogue.
The aim of these networking activities is to help build, through education, a peaceful Europe.
